My Idris wig came in this week. I was lucky enough to find a great, curly, chocolate brown wig on eBay for an amazing price. As the wig wasn’t quite as full as I wanted, I also purchased a curly extension to add body to Idris’ wild coif.
It needs some teasing, but the color is gorgeous
After some research online, I knew I wanted to spring for a lace front. I’m really glad I did, because this wig is super comfortable!
Pay no attention to my poor, abused dummy head.
There are so many types of wigs, the choices are staggering! There’s standard cap, wefted cap, monofilament, lace-front, full-lace, real or synthetic. Using a wig for cosplay, you must consider a number of things. Comfort is always a top priority. Consider the timing of the event you’ll be dressing for; if you’re wearing your wig for a spring or summer con, you will want something light and breathable. Monofilament Cap Wigs are mesh and the hair is individually hand tied at the crown so that it can be brushed or parted in any direction. These types of wigs are a bit pricey tho, so for a winter or fall event you might not need to spring the extra cash.
Consider also the hair style you’re going for. Standard cap wigs are great, and inexpensive, but only really work if already styled the way you want. The hair is machine-sewn onto the cap so that the layers of hair are pre-designed into a particular style.
Lastly, think about durability. If you’re going to be in this wig for hours at a time, doing Cthulhu KNOWS what, you’ll need a wig that can keep up with you. Full lace wigs are designed to stick to the entire scalp, so not really used for aesthetic purposes. Lace front wigs have lace around the forehead, and the remainder of the cap consists of material used by regular wigs. This is a great wig type for full, pulled back styles, as the lace front can be glued to the hair-line and covered by make-up to look very natural.
